COFFEE GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Arabica

Also called Coffea arabica, the arabica trees area the most widely cultivated around the world. There are 200 varieties, including the highly prized Bourbon and Mocha.

Aroma

Complex and numerous, coffee's aromas are only released when it is heated. The aromatic substances are very volatile and easily damaged by exposure to light and air.

Bean

A coffee seed, one of two contained in a coffee cherry.

Body

This is a quality of aromatic coffee the taste of which remains in the mouth. It is also used to describe the consistency and depth of the coffee.

Cherry

The fruit of the coffee tree is referred to as a cherry, which it resembles in form and colour. Normally there are two coffee beans in each cherry.

It is called Kaffee in German, qahwa in Arabic, kai-fey in China, Kaffe in Denmark, cafe in France Spain & Portugal, bunna in Ethiopia, Kahvi in Finland, Kafes in Greece, Kave in Hungary, Caffe in Italy, Kehi in Japan, bun in Kenya, Koffie in the Netherlands, qehve in Iran, Cafea in Romania, Kofe in Russia and Kahveh in Turkey.
